Alffi

I've never written an eclogue
But if I did, I know,
I would write it about our dog -
In Autumn fog, in snow,
In Summer sun or Spring time rain,
When it's dark or frosty,
Alffi asleep or awake again,
Dull or Pentecosty,
In heat, in cold, when skies are blue,
Our ball of white and brown.
Good dog Alffi - cocking your head,
And bad dog Alffi - Down!

Wet hands

When I was a child,
My mother's hands were
always wet
- a thing I didn't get.
But now there's no regret,
Perhaps they're even yet,
Though I wouldn't want to bet,
Still getting rather wet.
I'm forever in her debt.

Davy Jones had too many bones

Davy Jones had too many bones
So this is what he did -
He cut off his hair,
For he didn't care.
He cut off his hair,
And left his head bare.

Davy Jones had too many bones
So this is what he did -
He cut off his nose
Yes, there his nose goes.
He cut off his nose,
And how the blood flows.

Davy Jones had too many bones
So this is what he did -
He cut off his ear,
All done with good cheer.
He cut off his ear,
Removed without fear.

Davy Jones had too many bones
So this is what he did -
He cut off his thumb,
I know it sounds dumb,
He cut off his thumb
It left his hand numb.

Davy Jones had too many bones
So this is what he did -
He cut off his hand.
He did as he planned.
He cut off his hand
And thought it was grand.

Davy Jones had too many bones
So this is what he did -
He cut off his arm.
He did himself harm.
He cut off his arm
But he stayed quite calm.

Davy Jones had too many bones
So this is what he did -
He cut off his toe
Well what do you know?
He cut off his toe,
His toe had to go.

Davy Jones had too many bones
So this is what he did -
He cut off his foot
Blade to foot he put.
He cut off his foot,
His foot was kaput.

Davy Jones had too many bones
So this is what he did -
He cut off his leg
And put in a peg.
He cut off his leg
And started to beg.

Davy Jones had too many bones
So this is what he did -
He cut off his head,
It drove him to bed.
He cut off his head
And now he is dead.

Prunestones

I loved a soldier.
I said, make me your bride.
But he went to war, and oh how I cried.
He left me alone, no man by my side.

I loved a sailor.
I said, come marry me.
But he sailed away on the big blue sea.
He left me alone, to weep on the quay.

I loved a tailor.
I said, when shall we wed?
But he went to work with needle and thread
And left me alone, as though I were dead.

I loved a tinker.
They read our wedding banns.
But he walked away with kettles and pans
And left me alone, with old tins and cans.

I loved a rich man.
I said, we'll wed today.
But he got busy, filling barns with hay.
He left me alone, I'm wasting away.

I loved a poor man
And we married in haste.
But some how marriage was not to his taste.
He left me alone, to wane and to waste.

I loved a beggar.
I said, will you be mine?
But the beggar was caught, given a fine,
And left me alone, to moan and to pine.

I loved a thief man.
I said, we'll wed today.
The thief said that marriage was A-okay
He saw all my goods - then took them away!

Butterflies

Last night I dreamt of it again -
My brother he was five
And I was coming up to seven,
So glad to be alive.

We all into the garden went,
The butterflies to free.
How we had longed for this event -
Mam, dad, the brothers three.

We'd watched the butterflies all grow
But now the time was nigh
To set them free, to let them go,
Release them to the sky.

We stood there in the garden bright,
So long ago those hours,
The jars were opened; they took flight,
They danced among the flowers.

How beautiful the butterflies,
God made their tiny wings.
He made them fair for he is wise,
All praise O king of kings!

Humility

Watch a seagull fly,
Eye must not cry.
Feet webbed to the earth,
I sometimes overestimate my worth -
Remember good works on three fingers,
Evil on hands and feet,
Yet I try to seem sweet
But the aftertaste lingers
And my head remembers
Failings and fumblings, footfaults and falls.
But kind people speak to me
And I forget I am humble.
I can never see
How I can be excellent
And never realise or say
But still I pray.

On the dangers of dancing

Dance! Dance! Dance!
Like a tiger on the loose

Dance! Dance! Dance!
Like a gawky gliding goose
Dance! Dance! Dance!
Like a body on a noose.

Psychology

Sigmund Freud
Would get annoyed
If your feet were on the couch -
He was always such a grouch!

Carl G Jung
Once took a bung
They gave him lots of money
So he'd say something funny.

Abe Maslow
Was not too slow
To put the blame on others
Especially his brothers.

Carl Rogers
Loved the Dodgers
He'd often go watch them play
But not if they played away.

Miztli

In the land of Monteczuma
Miztli, strong black puma,
Went hunting far and high and low,
Seeking his deadly foe.

Quezelcoatl, and at his side
His dog - his joy and pride.
Xoloitzquintle his loyal hound,
Dog always faithful found.

This famous hound, Xoloitzquintle,
There in Us'macinta,
Lay 'midst reeds, sole lord of his lair,
Who would attack? Who'd dare?

The puma travelled three long days
Then on his foe did gaze,
And then for three more days he lay
To contemplate his prey.

Then Xoloitzquintle, dread dark hound,
Arose without a sound
And saw strong puma, Miztli dark,
Bared his teeth, snarled a bark.

And then suddenly the puma,
Pride of Monteczuma,
Sank his sharp teeth into his flesh,
Tasted blood, warm and fresh.

A struggle then ensued twixt two,
They at each other flew,
Until the massive hound lay dead.
The puma Miztli fed.

Quezelcoatl - he had not slept -
At such bad news, he wept.
And as for Lord Monteczuma
Champion of the puma.

He built a temple to its name
And sought to spread its fame.
And still in Tula there it stands
The shrine made by his hands.

Music

I'm in love with music,
Music, music, music.
It's really such a thing -
But I can't sing.

Days

How I long for, O how I dream,
Of days that are now past
Days that now are gone forever
Days that did not last.

All I see now, yes, all I feel,
These days go by so fast
Days that float away forever
Days that will not last.

Exception

It's an exception to be an exception
But we're the exception that proves the rule.

It's an exception to be an exception
But we're the exception that proves the rule.

Oh how I remember when I first loved you
O such a lovely child, you glowed,
But as for me - I was so old.

But now that we're together
Nothing can go wrong, I'm sure
Yes, it's turned out in his perfect plan
Though unexpected before
Our love cannot fail,
It's an exceptional tale.

It's an exception to be an exception
But we're the exception that proves the rule.

It's an exception to be an exception
But we're the exception that proves the rule.

She sometimes wears ...

She sometimes wears the colour green,

In green she looks serene.
When clothed in green her beauty's seen,
In green she is the queen.

She sometimes wears the colour blue,
Blue is her perfect hue.
When clothed in blue, her style's in view,
She's good in blue, it's true.

She sometimes wears the colour red,
Red's at the very head.
When clothed in red, she's great, as said,
In red she looks drop dead.

She sometimes wears the colour gold,
Gold it never gets old.
When clothed in gold, a six she's rolled.
In gold her own she'll hold.

She sometimes wears the colour black,
In black she'll nothing lack
When clothed in black, plainness attack.
Her black takes me aback.

She sometimes wears the colour white,
In white she's outta sight.
When clothed in white, she's a delight,
In white, she looks just right.

When I write

When I write the book about my life
Gonna have a part where I meet you, girl!

When they film the film about my life
There'll be a bit in which I meet you, girl!

20200415

Structure

It struck the strict man, he could not strike
The stricken child, not since the stroke.
Instead he loves her left hand to stroke
And say the strike has spoiled the land.

To the girl in the reflection

To the girl in the reflection
I know it's wrong to stare
While I gaze in your direction,
Just pretend that I'm not there.
I imagine your affection
Ending my dejection
As I chase my predilection
For spending my journey back home
With the girl in the reflection.

Hear us O Shepherd

Hear us, O Shepherd,
Hear your own.
Come now, awaken
Your great might.
Hear us, O Lord God,
From your throne.
Shine forth and dispel
This dark night.

The widow's cruse

The widow's cruse was real good news,
A providence from God,
A vivid signal of his care
Of which to be aware.

The Widows cruise is real bad news,
It's not designed for God
It's meant to be a fun affair
But drives us to despair.

Preaching

I stand here bold, alone,
My voice is heard.
Between earth and God's throne,
I preach God's word.

Lonely, not lost, I stand,
With all in sight,
People on my left, and
God on my right.

How dare I stand so tall
Between such fears?
Alone, I rise or fall,
Know joy or tears.

But there comes to my side
The Holy Dove,
Who purifies Christ's Bride,
And sheds forth love.

I'm no longer alone,
God's voice is heard.
We bow before God's throne,
Our hearts are stirred.

Fat Slob

He's as large as he is lonely,
He's as mean as his gut.
He tries hard to appear happy
But his life's in a rut.

He so so longs to be thinner,
How he longs to be slim.
But he knows he's not a winner,
No there's nothing in him

He's just like a great big balloon
That looks about to burst.
He'll probably fall ill quite soon,
Maybe something far worse.

He tried to go on a diet,
Tried his best to lose weight
But after less than a fortnight
He said "You can't fight fate".

He stuffs himself full every day
All he thinks of is EAT!
He will keep on going that way
'Til he can't see his feet .

And that is how he's gonna stay,
His taste buds quite deranged,
For I cannot see any way
He ever will be changed.
