Catechism 7

Questions 42-52

CM

And so what is the first command?

No other gods but me.
What is taught by this first command?
To worship God only.

What about the second command?
An idol do not make.
What is taught by this next command?
Idolatry forsake.

Then what is in the third command?
God's name, treat it with care.
What does it teach, the third command?
God's name, word, works, revere. 

And what about the fourth command?
The Sabbath keep to me.
What is taught by the fourth command?
The Sabbath keep holy.

The Christian Sabbath's on what day
Each week it's the first day,
It's on a Sunday, the Lord's Day,
The Christian's Sabbath day.

Why do we call it the Lord's Day?
As Christ made it his own.
He rose up on that very day
(See rolled away the stone).

How should the Sabbath be observed?
Rest from work, prayer and praise, 
In hearing, reading from God’s Word,
Helping others always.

Questions  68 - 71

What's a cov'nant? An agreement
Made by two or by more.
By cov'nant of grace what is meant?
It's one made long before.

It's an eternal agreement
Within the Trinity
To save certain persons, elect,
Now and eternally.

To do what did Christ undertake
In the cov'nant of grace?
All the law to keep for men's sake
And suffer in their place.

Did Christ ever sin to his shame?
No, as man and as child,
Our Lord was holy, without blame,
He remained undefiled.

Questions 53-67

And now what is the fifth command?
To honour mum and dad.
What is taught by the fifth command?
They must be loved, obeyed.

Then next, what is the sixth command?
It says you shall not kill.
What is taught by the sixth command?
Repent from all ill-will.

What is in the seventh command?
Adultery must not be.
What is taught by this next command?
Keep heart, word, deed, stain-free.

And then what is the eighth command?
It says you must not steal.
What is taught by the eighth command?
Don't take. Be honest, real.

And what is it, the ninth command?
False witness do not bear.
What is taught by the ninth command?
Speak truth and say what's fair.

Fin'lly, what is the tenth command?
Don't want what you don't have.
What is taught by the tenth command?
Be pleased with what you have.

Can any keep these ten commands?
No, none since Adam's fall.
None ever kept these ten commands
Or can - we're sinners all.

Of what use are the ten commands?
Our duty thus we know,
It's made clear that we are condemned,
Our need of Christ they show.

Does God declare all men condemned?
No, though he justly could.
See, a gracious cov'nant he made,
Many to save - how good!

Catechism 6

Questions 34-41

At Sinai how many commands
Did God give? - There were ten.
What can we call these ten commands?
God’s moral law. Amen.

Now, in the first four what is taught?
Duty to God. And then,
As for the other six what's taught?
Duty to fellow men.

What would the sum of all ten be?
Love God with all I am,
My neighbour as myself. Who's he?
That's any fellow man.

With those who love him and obey
God's happy – can that be?
Oh yes it is. We've heard him say
'I love them that love me'.

Is God pleased if men don't obey
Or love him? What's it say?
No. 'With sinners' we've heard him say
'God's angry every day'.

Questions 28-33

And what is it that Adam's sin
To all mankind did do?
In sin and mis'ry all are born,
Of all mankind that's true.

What have we all inherited
Due to orig'nal sin?
A sinful nature's credited
Because of Adam's sin.

What is sin? Sin is transgression,
Yes, of the law of God.
What is meant by that expression?
To do what's banned by God.

What is by every sin deserved?
God's anger, we must say,
And the judgement that is reserved
For use on that great day.

Do we know just what God requires?
Yes. Laws to us are giv'n,
Both in our hearts (our good desires),
And (surer yet) those writt'n.

Q&A 22-27

In what condition had God made
Adam and Eve at first?
Holy and happy they were made,
That's how they were at first.

Happy and holy did they stay?
No, they against God sinned.
Our parents sinned in just what way?
They ate the fruit God banned.

Forbidden fruit, why did they eat?
Because they'd not believe
What God had said. Let us repeat:
No, they would not believe.

Who tempted into sin this pair?
The devil tempted Eve,
And she with Adam did then share,
He took the fruit from Eve.

What was it to our parents came
When they sinned at the tree?
They sinful, mis'rable became,
Happy not, nor holy.

So where can you learn how
To love God and obey?
The Bible is the one place now,
Then read that book we say.

Who did the Bible write?
It was those holy men
Who had the Holy Spirit's light,
He taught those holy men.

Who were our parents first?
Adam it was and Eve.
How were they made our parents first?
What is it we believe?

God Adam's body made,
He made it from the ground,
Then from that body Eve he made
And so the two were found.

What else did God supply?
Besides their bodies, what?
He gave them souls that could not die
That's what from him they got.

And do you have a soul
Besides a body, say?
Yes. I've a never dying soul,
That's how it is today.

A soul - how do you know?
The Bible tells me so.
'What is my soul?' All that should know
And love God too – that's so.

Q&A 6-13

Are there more gods than one?
There's only one; one God.
One God but how many persons?
Three persons but one God.

Who are these persons three?
The Father and the Son,
The Holy Spirit – that makes three -
The Father, Spirit, Son.

Does God like us have a body?
No, God is a spirit.
Infinitely, eternally
Yes, God is a spirit.

And where is God? Where's God?
God's everywhere, you see.
Can you see God? I can't see God.
But he always sees me.

Are all things to God known?
Yes. Nothing's hidd'n, it's true,
Can God do all things? Yes he can
His holy will he'll do.

Catechism 1

Q&A 1-5

Who made you? God made me
And what else did God make?
God all things he has made to be.
Yes, all things he did make.

And why did God make you?
Why did he make all things?
For his own glory, it is true,
That's why he made all things.

How is God glorified?
By loving him and this -
Doing what he commands (your guide)
God's glory comes through this.

Why should you glorify?
Because he has made me
And takes care of me, that is why
I must give him glory.
